THIS OR THAT: EXCEED DESIGNS TIRANT RAZOR V3 VS ULTRA

THIS OR THAT: EXCEED DESIGNS TIRANT RAZOR V3 VS ULTRA

This week we got in two examples from the Exceed Design's lineup of utility knives. The two we received were their TiRant Razor V3 as well as their Tirant Ultra which are utility knife flippers with interchangeable blades. They are both very small and compact and can easily fit into any EDC set up with ease. In recent months, I have been becoming more interested in utility knives as a viable option for the slicing niche within the carry. I am no stranger to Rivery MFG's Zero and have been a longtime fan of theirs. The Zero kind of feels like its own thing with its unique opening mechanism. The TiRant is a more traditional utility knife. Even within the average utility knife that you can pick up at Lowes, the flipping functionality isn't special. All of them have the ability to switch out blades which is the biggest draw for utility knives as a segment. The idea that you don't have to worry about sharpening and upkeep allows you to just cut away to your heart's content. If it gets dull, just switch it out with another blade. Many sources on the internet say that the TiRant is a revolutionary piece that has completely changed the game of utility knives. This is all based on the idea that Exceed Design use skiff and ceramic bearings for their flipping system which does give it a more luxurious and higher end feel but is this really a revolutionary advancement within the knife space? I would say no. It does add to the appeal and may be enough to convince someone who's in the market to spring for this specific example. The apparent business model for the TiRant is taking something basic and boring and making it more fun. The TiRant has a plethora of options that make them unique. The multitude of colors and scale textures as well as razor blades with unique designs make it a more fun play on the utility knife. Is it enough to get new customers? And if so, which one do you choose?

Though we are looking into two examples of the TiRant, the line up actually consists of three pieces. You have the Razor V3, the Ultra as well as the M model. The M model is a more scaled down option with a push forward razor blade. The look is quite basic and there are plenty of makers who have the exact same offering. The other two are more interesting to me due to their added value proposition of a higher end build quality as well as a more satisfying actuation. So, comparing the two, the Ultra is just the biggie size version of the V3. The Ultra comes in at 7.15" fully open vs the 6.13" of the V3. The weight is nearly identical, and they both sport a pocket clip so it should be very easily adaptable to your EDC set up. The Ultra does have the added functionality of a ridged thumb stud so you can open without the flipper tab. One of the big reasons to jump for the Ultra is the added blade real estate for added cutting ability. The V3's blade is mostly hidden but the Ultra give you the full functionality of the entire blade. I personally think the design of the Ultra is more appealing with its more grooved and contoured handle. Visually it just does a little something more for me. If you are trying to put together a more compact set up, the V3 is the way to go. At the end of the day, you really don't need all of that blade. Majority of the action this knife will see is opening boxes.

I did want to note this for people who are in the market for one of these things. I have seen a lot of websites in my day, and Exceed Designs has one of the worst websites I have ever seen. It is utterly unusable. Every time you click ANYTHING on their website whether it be a listing, a drop-down menu, a site acknowledgment, it just takes you to some page that is trying to steal your data. If they weren't carried by other official dealers, I would say their website is some type of phishing scam. I wouldn't trust giving their website my credit card info if my life depended on it. They seriously need to fix this because I guarantee they are losing customers from this. If you really want to pick up one their pieces, make sure to do it from a site that is not their own.

AUTHORS NOTE: I reached out to the team at Exceed Designs and they are actively trying to fix their website after they just got hacked.
