QUICK TAKE: THERMAL TACTICAL AMBIENT

QUICK TAKE: THERMAL TACTICAL AMBIENT

The Thermal Tactical Ambient is a collaboration between TASK Knives and Poikilo in disguise. It is designed by TASK Knives and built by the team over at Poikilo. This little factoid explains a lot in how this tiny frame lock folder can pack so much of a punch with a less recognizable name. Decreased size isn't an excuse to skimp on detailing and quality. The Ambient has more character in its pinky toe than most EDC companies that you’ll find today. It is somewhat of a coincidence that we are reviewing two EDC pieces in a row from the same group of makers. Needless to say that  Thermal Tactical products are pretty much achieving the same punch as the products found in the regular line ups from Task and Poikilo. Similar to how some authors will use a pseudonym to see if their prowess goes beyond just their name recognition, it seems that TASK and Poikilo are doing the same. A famous example of this was Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman and still ending up on the best seller list. In this case Task and Poikilo are Stephen King and Thermal Tactical is the Richard Bachman.

The Ambient comes in at an overall length of 5” which is HUGE if you ask me but in the knife world this is on the smaller side. The blade itself measures in at 2.1” and is constructed from M390 with a stonewashed finish. It also has a very unique blade shape with a generous indentation along the top of the blade. It kind of reminds me of the way a rhinoceros skull looks in design and like a rhinocerous, you don’t want to get in its way. Moving on to the handle, it is constructed from G10. The handle has a nice texturing to it and also features a solid strip of titanium running along the side of the scale. The overall ergonomics do leave a little to be desired though. I don’t have huge hands but the flipping action with the thumb studs can prove a little challenging. The frame lock mechanism isn’t proportional in terms of accommodating to the smaller size. It runs about half the length of the handle which is a welcome design choice that allows for an easier closing action. It does not feature a pocket clip but does have a lanyard hole. The lanyard hole is being used for an anodized titanium radiator bead in our case but you could also use it to connect to a backpack or clip onto a key ring.

Short story long, the Ambient is a fun little piece that can make itself at home in any respective EDC set up. They have the build quality and the big names behind it, but you can still think of it as a little niche EDC product when you’re showing it off to your friends. Don’t you wanna stay ahead of the curve? Be a trend setter within the EDC space? The Thermal Tactical Ambient is waiting…
