QUICK TAKE: DEMKO COMBAT EXTRA THICK (CXT) DRAGON SCALE

QUICK TAKE: DEMKO COMBAT EXTRA THICK (CXT) DRAGON SCALE

Demko has really been putting in the effort as of late. With their performance first philosophy as well as their ability to make some of the strongest knives within the EDC industry, what does the CXT or Combat Extra Thick have to offer that their older AD20 models do not. In other words, what makes the CXT so special and is it enough to add it to your everyday carry rotation?

The biggest focus of the CXT model is the blade. Emphasis on biggest. The CXT has a 3.5 Barong Blade made from a CPM3V Steel with a stonewash finish. The extra thick part of the name refers to the .250" thickness that would make King Arthurs jaw drop. A whole quarter of an inch! 3V is already renowned for its toughness and its ability to take extreme pressures. When you make that piece of metal .250" thick, you can rest assured that whatever you put this blade up against is going to win the fight. The Barong style blade seemingly adds more slicing real estate with its upturned edge. With the improved edge retention of the 3V steel, you can sleep easy knowing that even a diamond wouldn't dull this blade (Tombtone reviews subject to hyperbole).

The handle of the CXT has the same fit and finish that we are all familiar within the AD20 line up of knives from Demko. What really drew me to this specific model was their use of this Scale Mail Pattern, or as I like to call it: Dragon Scale. The styling of the handle also hints at the overall robustness of the CXT. Chain mail was popular for its ability to deflect the blows of swords and other sharp objects while also maintaining its ability to flex and allow its wearer to maintain mobility. Besides it just looking cool and unique, it also bolds well with the overall use case of the CXT. This is a knife that can take literally anything you can possibly throw at it. I have always been a proponent of the simpler the better when it comes to most mechanical objects. The less moving parts, the less likely that something will go awry. With the Demko Shark Lock system that with the CXT also has that .250" thickness, the actuation of this knife can beat out any debris or other challenges that the world might throw its way. All of this to say that the Demko AD20 CXT continues the legacy of Demko knives being the pocket tool that will outlive you, and now with the extra thickness, can act like your very own personal bullet proof plate in your pocket.
