QUICK TAKE: ARCANE CRAWLER DAMASTEEL
Share
Arcane is an adjective meaning secret, mysterious or understood by only a small group of people. Acclaimed knife and EDC maker Arcane Designs have really leaned into this idea of having a “in the know” type of feel for their products and they reward those who are willing to make the dive into their impressive line up of products. The knife that we are going to be look into today is their Crawler button lock flipper. The Crawler is undeniably striking and sports a very angular design that are reminiscent to outcroppings you would find within a cave system. Arcanes design langauge amongst their marketing materials very much leans into the science fiction direction. Depictions of planets and space suits are littered throughout and makes for a cohesive and intriguing brand. Branding is one thing, but how does the knife square up to our expectations?
The first thing one notices the moment they lie their eyes on this piece is the damasteel blade. It is truly the centerpiece of this knife. The blade is a wharncliffe style and has a horizontal notch for flipping purpose running about .75” along the top of the blade. The blade looks more substantial than it actually is with a blade width only measuring a couple of milometers. The blade has jimping along the spine so you can choose to actuate it by dragging your thumb across. There is a notch as well in the body allowing for a tradition flipping action as well. In total there are three ways you can choose to open this knife so it can conform to any of your preferred knife habits. The flipper tab is incredibly tiny, the jimping is also only about .5” along the spine of the blade, and the cutout in the blade is a little too narrow for my thumb to get grip with. If I had to choose a preferred actuation method, it would be the flipper tab, but I hope in the future they can make it slightly more substantial in a way that doesn’t compromise design.
Whenever you want to close the knife, you will have to locate the small button lock release next to the pivot. It is indeed quite small and doesn’t feel incredibly satisfying to depress. The button is the same color as the body so it seemlessly integrates into the design. A defining piece of styling is this unique raised detailing in a black PVD that surrounds the pivot screw. The pivot itself is in the matching body color in a raw titanium, but I would have preferred they added the same black PVD coating to the pivot screw so it could blend in withe collar styling piece. There is a beveling along the entire handle scale that feels great in hand. It is very comfortable to hold. The titanium handle is very lightweight and with the large blade, it is a little top heavy.
The Arcane Crawler is crawling its way into my EDC rotation. It has a fantastic eye catching design with a very robust feel. Majority of the things I carry have to serve a visual purpose as well as a functional one. IN the Crawlers case, it has more beauty than brains in all actuality but sometimes that is what you’re looking for. If you wanted pure functionality with little emphasis on design, then go get a $10 knife on amazon. If you like surrounding yourself with beautiful objects, then look no further.
